lyrics

the sparrow

I once had a love thought it was true
across the green fields where the sparrow once flew
but spring had long gone, winter was cold
it's amazing how quickly your soul can be sold

I gave her my best for five full years
days filled with laughter and sometimes a tear
because no road is straight, there's curves and bends
I never expected this road to end

you search for the truth, you beg to know why
you learn to ignore what's probably a lie
you look in the mirror, the face that you see
is the ghost of a man who you used to be

now I sit alone in a west country pub
a pint and a pen takes the place of a love
that defined my soul, that gave me hope
as I tie a noose in the end of a rope

across the green fields, where the sparrow once flew

about

Cletis Carr

Singer-songwriter Cletis Carr knows a good yarn. Especially when paired with a good melody and some gritty slide guitar.

A careful student of the human condition, Carr's story-songs play out like mini-movies. Tales of joy, heartbreak, redemption, ordinary madness and everyday heroes are framed in a rich tapestry of acoustic steel-string guitar, dobro and lap slide.
