Making Dreams Come True
02:36
|

making dreams come true (cletis carr)
spent all summer behind a petrol pump
tried to save enough to get out of this dump
the year was ’71 and I was eighteen
no country town is gonna help find my dream
just a few more weeks, I’ll leave it all behind
I’ll get outta here before I lose my mind
cause it’s all so hard to do
making dreams come true
bought the petrol station in ’76
had me a wife and had a mess of kids
more and more of them mouths to feed
if I could only get the big money down in the city
just a few more weeks, I’ll leave it all behind
I’ll get outta here before I lose my mind
cause it’s all so hard to do
making dreams come true
now it’s ’94, and my son’s eighteen
he’s pumping petrol and pumping up his dreams
saving his money for the big escape
he’s got a mind like steel and superman’s cape
just a few more weeks, he’ll leave it all behind
he’ll get outta here before he loses his mind
I used to be one of his kind
but it’s all so hard to do
making dreams come true

Rosie & The Ghost

rosie & the ghost (cletis carr)
rose and I are from west virginia
I’ve known her since we were eight or nine
she says when the ghost gets in you
that’s when you leave to see what you can find
goodbye rosie, friend of mine
I hope you know what you leave behind
goodbye rosie, fare thee well
and whatever it is you’re looking for
I hope it serves you well
she said she was headed for the west coast
guess she’s been reading too much kerouac
she said that the ghost pointed to a new signpost
and unlike jack, she won’t be coming back
goodbye rosie, friend of mine
I hope you know what you leave behind
goodbye rosie, take good care
and whatever you’ve been looking for
I hope you find it there
that fall I got a call from rose
she was hanging out in san francisco bay
I asked how it was working out with her & her ghost
said they might head down mexico way
goodbye rosie, friend of mine
I hope you know what you left behind
goodbye rosie, shoot for the moon
and whatever you’re still searching for
I hope you find it soon
the last time I heard from rosie
her postcard arrived from peru
she said that it’s just like west virginia
she really didn’t know what to do
well, come back rosie, friend of mine
I hope you know what you left behind
come back rosie, I hope you’ve found
there’s a ghost waiting for you
back in your home town

21st Of July

21st of july (cletis carr / kevin bennett)
21st of july
waving goodbye
to my family and friends, on the platform
got some cream on my sleeve
this birthday boy has to leave
cause there's money to be made, in the city
where the neon sun never sets
and the sky's filled with jets
and they shine like gold, and silver
one more year, now I'm outta here
finally, happy birthday to me
got a job that suited me
in a great big company
and I climbed that ladder to the top
played the game, made the deal
found a legal way to steal
bet they're all real proud of me
don't get home very much
mom & dad keep in touch
birthday cards in july, cause they miss me
one more year, that I've watched disappear
like a dream, happy birthday to me
21st of july
how the time sure does fly
all alone, far from home, on my birthday
one more year, seen myself disappear
let it be, happy birthday—to me

Dirt

dirt (cletis carr / richard porteous)
don’t stop the kids out there playing
ain’t it good to see them smile
dad will soon be home, god willing
they’ll be happy for a while
the horn at 6am shakes the windows
trains rumble down the line
the morning shift assembles
dragging heels through the shadows
there’s gold down the mines
the coal town clouds
gathered from the ground
fall on lines of laundered shirts
the tower wheels stand tall
and they bury us all
and I can’t wash away the dirt
grandfather bent his back below
so he’d be safe up above
he’s gone to heaven now, god rest his soul
the pride in his bones has turned to dust
ch
I see the boss in the house on the hill
the master of his grand design
don’t stop the kids out there playing
there’s no escape from the mines

Cletis Carr
Singer-songwriter Cletis Carr knows a good yarn. Especially when paired with a good melody and some gritty slide
guitar.
A careful student of the human condition, Carr's story-songs play out like mini-movies. Tales of joy, heartbreak, redemption, ordinary madness and everyday heroes are framed in a rich tapestry of acoustic steel-string guitar, dobro and lap slide.
